• Language Dozens of families follow the example of Canet's and begin the process to request 25% of Spanish

The trickle of rulings in favor of the introduction of 25% of subjects in Spanish in Catalan schools continues.

The Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) has considered the claim of a family from Cubelles (Barcelona), so that his son and the rest of his classmates will receive six and a half hours of classes in Spanish a week.

It is an identical case to that of the Turó del Drac school, in Canet, in which for two weeks a five-year-old child has also received 25% of classes in Spanish by judicial imperative despite opposition from the Generalitat and harassment to which he and his family have been subjected by the independence movement, even threatening to stone his house and organizing a demonstration next to the school to intimidate his parents.

In this case, it is the Escola Vora del Mar de Cubelles that must guarantee that the complainants' son receives "an education that includes Spanish in a reasonable proportion", which is set at that already standardized 25%, which in practice implies that the student and his class must take another "core" subject in Spanish in addition to the Spanish language subject itself.

The High Court also annuls the linguistic project of the center because "it does not contemplate the vehicular nature of Spanish as an official language together with Catalan."

There are already seven Catalan schools that see their linguistic project overthrown, according to the Association for a Bilingual School (AEB), which advises and capitalizes on complaints from parents such as Canet or Cubelles.

In recent days, more than fifty families have begun the procedures to demand that 25% of Spanish be taught in their respective schools and many others are waiting to receive information to begin the process.

The Supreme Court's ruling, pending execution

In parallel, the resolution of the Supreme Court that extends that 25% of compulsory Spanish to the entire Catalan educational system and not only to the classes of the complainant families is pending execution.

There is a period of two months to enforce compliance with the ruling, which is final and was announced on November 23.

The Government leaves compliance with the judgment in the hands of the Generalitat, but the Cabinet led by Pere Aragonès has already publicly stated that it will disobey the court order.

What's more, it has announced a plan of inspections in schools to ensure strict adherence to language immersion.

Yes the Government is having to swallow with specific sentences such as Canet or Cubelles, which are directed directly to the management of the centers denounced.
