Pandemic United States prepares Army to fight omicron variant
The speed at which the omicron variant is circulating in the United States is such that it
has
already
surpassed the peak that the delta reached
just a few weeks ago.
The 164,418 positive cases on average that were registered on September 2 have been widely exceeded by the 168,409 yesterday, with the new variant already overwhelmingly dominant.
The winter is expected to be harsh.
Some estimates hold that the
record for daily cases
, set last January when 251,232 were registered, will be broken.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the main thermometer since the pandemic began, 238,378 new positives and 2,024 deaths were confirmed on Wednesday, well above the average of the last two weeks in the United States.
The forecasts speak of a million cases a day, almost
four times more than the previous peak
, even before the end of the year, in an ideal setting due to the devilish speed of the new variant plus the winter cold and the inevitable family reunions and of friends for the Christmas holidays.
The good news is the studies that indicate the least danger of omicron and that at the moment it seems to be sending fewer people to hospitals than with previous variants. The bad news is the pressure that is already beginning to be felt in some medical centers in the country. One in ten hospitals already have their
intensive care units at 90% capacity
, a situation that they expect to reach a critical point in mid-January.
So it was a year ago. Then the United States averaged more than 250,000 daily cases and over 3,000 deaths, more than the number of people who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks. What Donald Trump equated almost two years ago with a common flu, today has infected more than 50 million people and has killed more than 800,000 Americans, the country with the most in the world by far.
Some scenes from last winter are also being repeated. Patients waiting to be seen due to lack of space in the ICU and exhausted medical personnel due to the avalanche of work. What is new is the endless lines to get tested for Covid and the
lack of nurses and doctors
as part of the so-called Great Resignation, which has led millions of Americans to leave their jobs in search of new opportunities.
Of course, the precautions for the Christmas celebrations are now less than a year ago.
Bárbara Ferrer
, the highest health authority in Los Angeles County -the most populous in the country-, has ensured that those citizens with the complete vaccination schedule and the booster dose will be able to meet without fear of being infected, recommending, yes, that Do it in small groups, keeping certain distances and leaving windows open as much as possible.
The fear now is the low number of those vaccinated with the booster dose, only 18% of the country, which would make them more prone to the effects of omicron.
Studies suggest that a third prick - in the case of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines - is the best shield available.
