As SVT has already experienced in advance, the government thus gave the go-ahead for an expansion of the final repository for radioactive waste from, for example, the nuclear reactors that are to be decommissioned and demolished.

A message that Östhammar municipality welcomed:

- It will also lead to other jobs, such as within the school, says Elin Dahm, operations manager with responsibility for attractiveness issues in Östhammar municipality.

Quick critique

Shortly after the decision was announced, however, criticism came from, among others, the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation and Friends of the Earth, who believed that the government should have said no.

"The associations have recently stated to the government that it has not been shown that the new repository will be safe enough," it is written in a press release.

Östhammar residents for detention

Unlike the environmental organizations, the public opinion that supports the storage of radioactive waste in the municipality is compact among the residents of Östhammar.

About 80 percent are positive about the storage of radioactive waste in surveys of Novus commissioned by the company Swedish Nuclear Fuel Management, SKB.
