Several people were still missing in the Aegean Sea yesterday, the Greek coast guard said, after 12 people were rescued overnight.

"A large number of people are still missing," coastguard spokesman Nikos Koukalas told the Greek ERT network.

He added that those who were rescued gave different information about the number of people on board the boat.

"We assume that the number of passengers ranges between 30 and 50 people, and we are continuing our research," he said.

It is noteworthy that most of those rescued from Iraq.

Migrants try to reach the Greek mainland or Italy from the Turkish Aegean coast or from other countries in the eastern Mediterranean in order to avoid staying for long periods in camps on islands in the eastern Aegean.

However, long voyages across the Mediterranean south or north of Crete mean the boats, which are usually old and sold by smuggling gangs, suffer engine failures on their voyage.
