The FDP has spoken out in favor of a second term in office for Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The FDP federal chairman Christian Lindner announced on Wednesday in Berlin that the FDP parliamentary groups in the federal and state governments had pleaded for Steinmeier to be supported in his candidacy for a further term in office.

"He is an outstanding personality and has made a contribution to the cohesion in our country in polarizing times," said Lindner on Wednesday evening on Twitter.

Steinmeier comes from the ranks of the SPD and has been Federal President since 2017.

In May he announced that he was aiming for a second term.

The next election is in February.
