December 21, 2021 "I can understand all those who can't take it anymore to hear about the virus and its variants. But we cannot close our eyes to the next wave". German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said this at a press conference in Berlin after the summit with the Laender presidents. Scholz explained that the infections of the current wave (caused by the Delta) are decreasing, the measures are effective and that this "would be good news". "Unfortunately we risk wave number five," he added, recalling that Omicron is dominant in Great Britain. "The infections will increase massively. We have to prepare now," he concluded.

Restriction of social contacts even for vaccinated and cured.

Limit of private meetings to a maximum of ten people, excluding children under 14.

"It is no longer the time for big New Year celebrations," the chancellor told the press.

For the unvaccinated the limit drops to a maximum of two guests.

As anticipated, the closure of clubs and discos is also triggered.

This measure was already in place in some Laender.

Football matches behind closed doors.

The measure should logically also concern the resumption of the Bundesliga from 7 January.

"To slow the spread of the virus, large interregional events with the public can no longer be organized, this concerns in particular football matches," said Scholz.
