At Stortorget in Kalmar, the Swedish Prison and Probation Service has set up a large, furnished trailer, equipped with, among other things, a prison cell.

On Tuesday, visitors flocked to ask questions about the upcoming prison.

- Many ask if it will be safe, or if you need to be worried, says Martin Holmberg, the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's director general.

- You do not have to be worried, rather the opposite.

It is an incredibly well-guarded area, he says.

The prison in Kalmar will be a closed institution and will be one of the safer institutions, with security class two.

Facilitates the work

Albert Gegaj is a prison inspector and works at Kalmar's 170-year-old prison.

- For us, this means that we finally get appropriate premises and make it easier to conduct the prison care that we want to conduct, he says.

How does it work to work there today?

- It is clear that it has its challenges, but at the same time I believe that we offer good prison care even today.

The prison will be ready in the area of Halltorp in 2027. In addition to the new prison, a new prison will also be built.

It will be located near the police station in Kalmar.
