The League of Arab States organized the event of the Excellence Award for Arab Women in its first session in the medical field for 2020, in cooperation with the UAE General Women’s Union and the United Nations Women’s Authority in the Women’s Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, and under the patronage and presence of the Secretary-General of the League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, to shed light on the role The progressive and continuous for women in selected fields and honoring their leadership achievements, experiences and creativity. The award ceremony coincided with the celebrations of the “Day of Honor for the League of Arab States” at the Expo.

The event was attended by the Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector at the League of Arab States, Ambassador Dr. Haifa Abu-Ghazaleh, and the Secretary-General of the UAE General Women's Union, Noura Al-Suwaidi.

A number of ambassadors of Arab countries in the United Arab Emirates and representatives of delegations from Arab member countries also participated.

Abul-Ghait praised the leadership of the United Arab Emirates, and Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, President of the General Women's Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (Mother of the Emirates), for their tremendous contributions to achieving the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may his soul rest in peace. .

He also commended UN Women for moving forward over decades to ensure equality for all, honoring the 200 million Arab women who thrive and elevate Arab society to a higher level.

Ambassador Haifa Abu-Ghazaleh said that “Arab women contributed to confronting the Corona virus, along with the white army of doctors, so the Arab League chose to give female doctors the Excellence Award for Arab Women in its first session.

We in the League of Arab States consider that allocating this award in its first session to a group of female doctors represents a clear recognition of their leadership and humanitarian role at this stage.”

The Secretary-General honored the winning female doctors, and they are as follows: Director of Hospitals Department in the United Arab Emirates, Dr. Kulthum Muhammad Al-Balushi, Head of the Infection Control Program in Lebanon, Dr. Suha King, Assistant Professor of Infectious Diseases, Dr. Fatima Al-Zahra Zammit, Foundation of Biology and Cancer Laboratory at Cairo University in Egypt, Dr. Mona Mustafa, Head of the Histology Department at Khawla Hospital in the Sultanate of Oman, Dr. Hanina Bint Muhammad Al-Kindi, Palestinian Minister of Health, Dr. Mai Kaileh, Consultant Infectious and Internal Diseases at Salmaniya Medical Complex and member of the national medical team to address the emerging corona virus in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Dr. Jamila Muhammad Al-Salman Dr. Shaima Hamadi Nouri, Head of the Catheterization Unit and Director of the Division for Infection Control in Iraq, Dr. Yasmine Al-Tuwaijri, Senior Scientist and Head of the Epidemiological Research Department in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Dr. Maryam Abdul Malik, Director General of the Primary Health Care Corporation in the State of Qatar.

The event is held based on the interest of the League of Arab States in enhancing the effective role of Arab women in Arab society by advancing development, as the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States proposed launching the Arab Women Excellence Award initiative in the beginning in 2020, which is an in-kind award granted to Arab women personalities in one of the Domains that are determined annually.

And based on the decision to approve the Arab Women’s Committee, the secretariat announced the allocation of the annual “Excellence Award for Arab Women” starting in the year 2020.
