Hoh Xil Trio

In 2022, Hoh Xil protection will usher in its 30th anniversary:

  In 1992, Jiesang Sonam Dajie, then deputy secretary of the Zhiduo County Party Committee of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, founded the Zhiduo County Western Working Committee and took the lead in raising the banner of Hoh Xil protection. In the desperate contest, use life to write a heroic prelude;

In 1997, the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve was approved to be established. In the following 20 years, a complete set of mature protection system has gradually formed. Under the continuous crackdown, poaching has finally disappeared, and the population of Tibetan antelope has continued to increase.

In 2017, Hoh Xil successfully declared a World Heritage Site, and a more profound change is also taking place, affecting today and the future: With the advancement of the national park system pilot, Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve was historically integrated into the Sanjiangyuan National Park The Kekexili Management Office of the Yangtze River Source Park is moving towards a higher level of governance and ushering in the continuity of the harmonious coexistence of man and nature...

  Hoh Xil, standing at thirty.

This thirty years from chaos to cure can be regarded as a trio of Hoh Xil.

  Heroic Overture

The former residence of Suonan Dajie is located in the county seat.

An ordinary residential house next to an asphalt street, with a sign "Glorious Home" hung on the door.

Entering the door, there is a spacious courtyard and a row of Tibetan-style bungalows.

In the yard, there are the trees that Sonam Takje planted and the wells he drew.

The bedroom, living room and indoor furnishings that Sonam Dajie lived in are still carefully protected. The floor of the old bedroom is still made of blue bricks. On the ceiling, there is an old-fashioned light bulb without a lampshade. .

This has become the patriotism education base of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province. I think back then, every time Sonam Dajie went to Hoh Xil, he set out from this bedroom.

"Kekexili" is Mongolian, meaning "beautiful girl", and is geographically located in the westernmost part of Zhiduo County.

This is a virgin land with a relatively complete preservation of the original ecological environment and a habitat for many rare wild animals and plants. Among them, the Tibetan antelope is the most concerned by the world.

In the 1980s, Tibetan antelope wool was recognized as the "King of Fiber" by the world textile industry. A "Shatush" shawl weighing only 100 grams can be sold for US$50,000 when it flows into the Central Asian, European and American markets.

For a time, criminals poured into Hoh Xil, and the poaching of Tibetan antelopes intensified.

In the early 1990s, when poaching was most rampant, the population of Tibetan antelopes in Hoh Xil had dropped to less than 20,000.

When the creatures are sad and the plateau is mourning, there are manpower to turn the tide and step forward.

In 1992, the 38-year-old Sonan Dajie, then deputy secretary of the Zhiduo County Party Committee of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, promoted the establishment of the Zhiduo County Western Working Committee and personally served as the secretary of the Western Working Committee.

From the first day of its establishment, this special organization has had the mission of protecting Hoh Xil’s wildlife resources and anti-poaching.

January 18, 1994, the coldest season in Hoh Xil.

Sonam Dajie, who led the team 12 times in the no-man’s land, suffered a surprise attack and counterattack while escorting poachers, and died heroically.

Five days later, when the reinforcements found the hero’s body, Sonan Dajie still maintained his right-handed gun, left-handed bolt, and glaring attitude. He had been frozen by the freezing temperature of minus 40 degrees Celsius into an unyielding ice sculpture on the snowy field. ...

"The deeds of Sonam Dajie deeply shocked me." The hero's sacrifice inspired more civilian volunteers to join the anti-poaching front line. In 1995, the 33-year-old Zhiduo County herder Phuntsok volunteered to sign up. Joined the reconstruction of the Western Working Committee, and the team members called the "Wild Yak Team" by later generations chose to set foot in the no-man's land and fought with poachers for their lives on many occasions.

A Sonam Dajie fell, and many ordinary heroes stood up.

  Rushing music

What happens on the vast plateau always affects the hearts of the country, government, and society.

In 1997, the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve was formally approved for establishment.

As the protection and management department of the natural environment and resources on this land, the Kekexili National Nature Reserve Administration has existed for 20 years, until it was integrated into the Sanjiangyuan National Park in 2017.

If the Western Working Committee founded by Sonam Dajie fired the first anti-poaching shot in Hoh Xil, and the wild yak team greatly deterred the arrogance of poaching activities, then the era of nature reserves has completely realized the extinction of poaching activities and built a new one. 20 years of the entire protection system.

This system is composed of several well-known protection stations: Bu Frozen Spring, Sonam Dajie, Wudaoliang, and Tuotuo River. These four permanent protection stations are lined up from north to south along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, stretching two The length of more than 100 kilometers has built a strong line of defense for Gao Yuanling.

However, the area of Hoh Xil is larger than that of Hainan Island, and four permanent protection stations are not enough.

In order to radiate a wider area and combat poaching, like the Western Working Committee and the Wild Yak Team, the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve has also organized a mountain patrol team to mobilize personnel from various protection stations to regularly go deep into uninhabited areas to carry out large-scale activities. Scale patrol.

Their existence is the greatest deterrent to lawless elements.

Hoh Xil in summer is an endless swamp. The patrol road is muddy. If you are not careful, the patrol vehicle will get stuck in the quagmire, making it difficult to move.

Pulling with a winch and digging with a spade, every rescue in a no-man's land with an average altitude of more than 4600 meters is a huge consumption of physical energy.

The team members said that patrolling the mountains in winter is even more uncomfortable. The temperature drops to more than minus 40 degrees Celsius, and the oxygen content is less than 40% of sea level.

At night, the tent was as cold as an ice cellar, and the trousers soaked in snow also froze into icy lumps. They were taken off and thrown on the ground, and they could even "stand".

Returning from the patrol, the team members are already like savages.

From May to August each year, Tibetan antelopes will migrate to Zhuonai Lake in the hinterland of Hoh Xil to give birth. A seasonal temporary protection station has been built here and it has become the only human structure in the vast uninhabited area.

The protection station is surrounded by iron walls to prevent brown bears from attacking. Inside is a simple prefabricated house. All materials are transported by themselves. The diesel engine is used for power generation. There is no signal and is isolated from the world.

Guo Xuehu, deputy director of Zhuonai Lake Protection Station, was also a media person.

Fifteen years ago, he was working for Yushu State TV. He heard that Kekexili recruited mountain patrol team members and resigned and signed up.

When he made this choice, his reason was simple: "I have admired Sonam Dagi since I was a child." Every summer, he and his colleagues stationed here for several months.

"Tibetan antelope, Tibetan wild ass, Tibetan antelope, and wild yak can be seen everywhere. This is a paradise for wild animals," Guo Xuehu sighed sincerely. "Watching them live and dance, our hard work is all worthwhile."

In the past 20 years, Hoh Xil organized more than 500 mountain patrols.

From 2006 to the present, no poaching gunshots have sounded in the no-man’s land, and the number of Tibetan antelopes has recovered to more than 70,000.

  Perpetual nature

Entering the uninhabited area, the main peak of the eastern section of the Kunlun Mountains, Yuzhu Peak, is covered with white snow, and the Chumar River, one of the source of the Yangtze River, flows quietly on the broad chest of Hoh Xil.

Here is also one of the important components of the source of the Three Rivers and the China Water Tower.

In 2017, Hoh Xil’s happy events continued: Not only did it successfully declare for World Heritage, but with the advancement of the national park system reform pilot, Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve was historically integrated into the Hoh Xil Management Office of the Yangtze River Source Park of the Three Rivers Source National Park, and the governance system was streamlined. , The realization of the national park at the source of Sanjiang "one brand manages to the end".

The vast land of 45,000 square kilometers is entering a higher level of protection, and the people walking on this land still stick to their mission and loyalty in the ordinary...

At the Wudaoliang Conservation Station, whenever Tibetan antelopes are migrating together, vehicles on the Qinghai-Tibet Highway will consciously stop to make way for them, and patiently pay attention to them. The concept of harmonious coexistence between man and nature has been deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.

At the Sonang Dje Protection Station named after the hero, the young "post-90s" protection staff carefully acted as "dads" for the rescued Tibetan antelopes. They have not yet gotten a family, but they take good care of the baby goats. Healthy and happy.

The sunny and warm smiles of the boys gave people full confidence in the future of Hoh Xil.

In June 2021, General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized during an inspection in Qinghai that to protect the ecological environment of Qinghai is the "big one in the country."

We must firmly establish the concept that green water and green mountains are golden mountains and silver mountains, and earnestly protect the earth's third pole ecology.

Hoh Xil is a microcosm of the great ecological changes in Qinghai. Behind the great changes is the inheritance and unremitting efforts of generations of protectors.

In June 2009, the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve received a special application: a young man named Qiupeizhaxi requested to be transferred to the Forest Public Security Branch of the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve Administration where working conditions are the most difficult. , Patrolling no man’s land, protecting Tibetan antelopes-he is Sonam Daj’s nephew.

Today, Qiupeizhaxi is still walking firmly and persistently in Hoh Xil, with a generous face and determined eyes, just like the incarnation of the old secretary of the Western Working Committee.

Environmental protection is responsible for keeping the soil and the ecological red line is not to be touched. Today's China has promoted the construction of ecological civilization to an unprecedented level.

Hoh Xil, who has entered a new era of national park governance, is continuing to write about the beautiful nature of harmonious coexistence between man and nature.
