December 18, 2021The death toll from the strongest typhoon that hit the Philippines this year has risen to at least 18, with the National Disaster Management Agency speaking today of "severe damage" in the worst-hit areas.

More than 300,000 people fled their homes and beach resorts as typhoon Rai devastated the country's southern and central regions, disrupting communications in many areas and knocking over concrete electricity poles.

More than 18,000 men including the army, police, coast guard and firefighters will join the search and rescue efforts in the most affected regions.

"There has been serious damage" to Surigao and Siargao, say the disaster agency.
