San Sebastián, 1976. Journalist, writer and director of

The Morning Symphony, the morning

program on Radio Clásica. Next January 1 he will present the Vienna New Year's Concert on RTVE

True or false? People like Christmas despite the Christmas music, which is unlivable Let's see: Christmas music is

Handel's

Messiah

, it's

Bach's Christmas Oratorio

, it's the

Nutcracker

ballet

, it's the Silent

Night

song

, which has a wonderful story ... Not bad, right? The Christmas repertoire is immense, and sometimes beautiful. Then there are the Christmas carols, which is not that we don't like them ... What we don't like are the spokespersons. And in that group, is the New Year's Concert in the good part? In the very good part. Brahms wrote the first notes of

The Blue Danube on paper

and wrote below: "I wish I had composed it." Waltzes and polkas are pieces that were considered superficial, celebratory music ... but they have ended up fulfilling the function of great works of art: they convey a message of love to life, an idea of faith in beauty, a moment of hope in which we think that the world does not have to be tortuous. And that's why it makes sense that they ring in the new year. It is sonorous champagne, a very pure emotional excitement. And what surrounds the music at the New Year's Concert? The lofty gentlemen, the Chinese tourists, that mix of Viennese refinement and

kitsch

aesthetics

... When the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra was founded, Strauss' music was banned because it seemed to them vile and hateful music. When it was recovered it was at the time of the annexation of the Reich and it has been said that it was a show of Austrian pride. And from there it went to the opposite, to say that the New Year's Concert was a Nazi and classist thing. The classist thing I am sure is not true. There are inexpensive tickets, much cheaper than in Bayreuth, for example. And, I looked, if 55 million people see the concert only in Europe, most of them, dressed in pajamas and not in suits ... it will be that it is not so classy. The label was the origin of the concert and I think it's good that that remains. What does it depend on whether the New Year's Concert goes well or badly? It seems that the Concert is always the same but there are differences.I remember Thielemann being criticized for not bringing lightness to what he was directing. Dudamel was also reproached for the same, for not understanding the concert well. Deep down, what is being discussed is a question of authenticity, of feeling that repertoire as one's own. Classic Radio also seems unalterable but I suppose there are things that change, right? On the old Radio 2 the announcers weren't even half joking. But it was the world that was like that. If you watch TV shows from 30 years ago, you will see a very formal, very solemn style. An air of "beware, we are talking to the nation." I myself was a very serious announcer who would never have imagined that I would say the things I say on a program like Symphony in the morning. We have become closer, more Radio 3.What do you know about your audience? That it is younger than it was and that it arrives without complexes. It is no longer necessary to arrive at Radio Clásica with a complex musical knowledge, the service we provide is enjoyable for many more people. And that's why we have the best EGMs in our history. I always put on Radio Clásica bounced off a political information program, when my head has already overheated and has given me anguish. That is a function of art, right? To console ourselves for the uneasiness of the world. What happens is that RTVE is experiencing a complex moment in which many people take early retirement. Obviously, we need a relief so that the project continues to function. In short, how difficult is the music that they program in this moment? It is not difficult, it is chosen to open the doors to everyone. There are more specialized programs but they are not in the central sections. But that doesn't mean we don't take classical music seriously. It is the most perfect that exists.
