December 16, 2021 "Our destinies, those of the planet and of all humanity, are inextricably linked. With its burden of suffering for millions of our fellow citizens, the pandemic has painfully reminded us that international cooperation and solidarity are not just options possible but resolutive needs. We can only be saved by acting all together. This latter consideration is recalled several times in our meetings, well before the advent of the pandemic. The reality of our days allows us to understand how in every area of international relations exclusively national approaches have no hope of success ".

Thus the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, speaking at the ceremony of the Christmas and New Year wishes by the Diplomatic Corps, also with reference to the Covid pandemic.

Mattarella noted that "despite the numerous problems that have undermined cooperation at the global level, the promotion of a multilateralism centered on the United Nations remains a priority for Italy. We hope that the United Nations will become an organization that is increasingly efficient, transparent, representative and responsible".

He also noted that "in fact, without an interconnected multilateralism, sensitive to the needs of developing countries and all social actors, we will not be able to resolve crises peacefully, efforts to effectively protect human rights will not be successful, nor those aimed at generating development opportunities so necessary at all latitudes. We will not be able to bequeath a habitable planet to the next generations ".

And "health, such a precious commodity and so immediately perceptible by each inhabitant of the globe, is an area from which we can begin the journey towards productive and just multilateral action".
