For him, it is a certainty: without the Covid-19 pandemic, the pension reform "would have come to an end".

But if he was finally forced to abandon it, Emmanuel Macron insisted on TF1, Wednesday evening: the reform is "essential".

Even if he says he still has not made his decision on a possible candidacy for his own succession, the Head of State has nevertheless turned to the future by providing details on a possible future version.

On the program: "work more" and go "towards an exit" from special diets.

"This reform (of pensions) is essential".

Without the pandemic, "it would have come to an end".

Macron pleads for a V2:

- "It is clear that we will have to work longer"

- "Adapt this time to the difficulties"

“It is now clear, all objective reports show it, unlike when I was elected, there is a funding problem.

And so it is clear that we will have to work longer ”, assures the tenant of the Elysee.

Until what age?

"This is the fruit of a democratic debate," Macron replies, without getting wet.

Three-regime simplification

"We must be prepared for the idea that we have to work longer", even if "that does not mean the same reality for everyone", insisted the President of the Republic. He cited in particular "a heavy truck driver", "a carer who travels more than 150 kilometers every day", or "someone who works in the assembly line", and considered it necessary to "adapt this life time to the work (…) to the difficulties of certain tasks ”. "We must also undoubtedly rethink what the work of seniors is, which is a real social challenge", finally noted Emmanuel Macron.

The French president reiterated his desire to go "towards an exit" from the special pension schemes, while acknowledging that reducing them from 42 to one, as he initially intended, is "too anxiety-provoking".

"We must move towards a simplified system" with "roughly three major regimes", for the public service, for private sector employees and for the self-employed, he explained.
