Maternity care in the Stockholm region is in crisis and as a step towards a solution, Nya Karolinska in Solna will receive another 500 births.

To fulfill the task, the hospital management at NKS plans to move the patients who are treated with skin, kidney and rheumatological diseases.

The care department should instead provide space for childbirth.

- It is sad that patient groups are pitted against each other, but the consequences for us will be enormous, says Cecilia Carlens, chief physician and chairman of the Swedish Rheumatology Association.

"Infection-sensitive patients must share a room"

Now 63 doctors and nurses in the care department are alerting that the decision to move the patient group entails a risk to patient safety.

It is pointed out, among other things, that infection-sensitive patients go from being cared for in single rooms to having to share rooms with others.

- We often care for young people with inflammatory, autoimmune diseases that affect internal organs and that lead to death without treatment, says Cecilia Carlens.

She continues:

- Infection patients should not be cared for together with others.

New Karolinska has probably not understood the scope of the direction decision they have made.
