15 December 2021 The International Automobile Federation (FIA) will undertake a detailed analysis of everything that happened in the UAE race last Sunday, when the entry of the

safety car

, would have allowed Max Verstappen to become world champion by overcoming his rival of Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton.

The FIA said the goal "is to draw conclusions before the start of the 2022 season in Bahrain on March 20".

Communication defects

"The circumstances relating to the use of the safety car - the World Motor Sports Council observed - following the accident of the driver Nicholas Latifi and the related communications between the FIA race management and the teams have generated misunderstandings and strong reactions from the Formula 1 teams, drivers and fans ".

The concern expressed by the FIA is that as a result "the image of the Championship will be clouded and the celebration in due form of Max Verstappen's first world champion title won by drivers".

The controversy over Verstappen's victory

At the end of last Sunday's race, the FIA had rejected two complaints presented by the Mercedes team: the appeals related to what happened during the safety car regime after which Verstappen, on the last lap, had overtaken the British and secured the victory at the GP.

The safety car entered the track after an accident with Nicholas Latifi

At first, the race director, Michael Masi, did not allow the late riders - including Verstappen who had changed their tires - to return to their original positions, then changed his mind, with the Dutchman being able to return to the shoulders of Hamilton, then overtaking him at the resumption of the race.

According to Mercedes, however, not all cars would have returned to their original position at the time of the restart, so this would not have been regular.
