The Spiegel journalist Christiane Hoffmann is to become deputy government spokeswoman at the request of the Greens. “Christiane Hoffmann is an accomplished journalist with great political expertise and strategic wisdom. She is well networked and has management experience and in-depth knowledge of Berlin's political and media operations, ”said Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck on Tuesday of the German Press Agency (dpa). "We look forward to her speaking for this government in the future." If the cabinet agrees, Hoffmann will take up the new position, according to a Green spokeswoman, at the beginning of next year.

The 54-year-old Hoffmann is a frequent guest on political talk shows and can look back on a long journalistic career with stations at home and abroad. She worked for the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" and the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung" and was a correspondent in Iran and Russia. In 2012 she moved to “Spiegel”, where she worked, among other things, as deputy head of the capital city office.

The new head of the Federal Press Office and government spokesman has been Steffen Hebestreit since last week - already spokesman for Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) when he was finance minister.

For its part, the FDP has proposed the former editor-in-chief of “Spiegel” and dpa, Wolfgang Büchner, as deputy government spokesman.

According to the Greens, Hoffmann is to act as the first deputy government spokeswoman.
