December 14, 2021 The United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) added Italy and two other countries, Greenland and Mauritius, to the highest risk category for travel, named with the number 4.

In its weekly update In the Covid-19 travel advisories, the CDC has also added the gigantic, freezing cold Greenland and the tiny tropical East African island of Mauritius to its "Level 4: Very high Covid-19" category. Typically, the CDC places a destination at Level 4 when more than 500 cases per 100,000 residents have been recorded in the past 28 days. All three countries have moved from level 3 to 4. Last week, the CDC had placed France, at level 4, along with six other destinations.

Italy's move to Level 4 comes as Europe continues to deal with another wave of Covid-19 cases. The UK is facing a "tidal wave" of infections from the new coronavirus variant Omicron, ministers warned, noting rapid transmission rates in London and across the country. Germany is also grappling with its fourth wave of pandemic and a sharp rise in deaths. These two countries are also on the CDC level 4 list. Although Europe is hit hard, it is not the only region with popular tourist destinations at level 4. Other places also considered to be at "very high" risk for Cdc travel include: • Barbados • Belize • Cayman Islands • Jordan • Seychelles Islands. In all, more than 80 countries were classified at level 4 on December 13 by the US CDC.
