A Syrian refugee causes the dismissal and imprisonment of a Danish minister

A Danish court has found Immigration Minister Inger Stojberg guilty of illegally separating the young couples of asylum seekers.

The Syrian refugee, Al-Nour Alwan, 26, had filed a complaint after the ministry separated him in 2016 from his wife, Rimaz Al-Kayyal, 17, and placed them in two different refugee centers for four months, even though she was pregnant.

In an impeachment trial described as historic, the judges ruled that Stojberg's decision to separate spouses, made in 2016, was illegal and sentenced her to 60 days in prison.

According to Euronews.

Stojberg said she was surprised by the ruling, adding that her decision was aimed at combating child marriage.

The case is the first impeachment trial in Denmark in three decades and only the sixth in its history.

"It is not only me who lost, but Danish values also lost," Stojberg said during a press conference outside the court, adding that she would accept the punishment.
