Libya: session in parliament on the difficulties hampering the electoral process

With less than eleven days of the presidential election, the situation remains confused in the country.
The government of National Union says it is "
ready
" for this election but the high electoral commission has still not published the final list of eligible candidates.
Officially, this list had to be announced at the latest fifteen days before the date of the poll.

The holding of the poll on December 24 seems more compromised than ever.
The electoral agenda has fallen significantly behind and differences persist on the legal texts governing this election.
Several observers, familiar with the Libyan dossier, have warned: the presidential election can no longer be held on the scheduled date.
With less than eleven days from the deadline, for lack of an official list of candidates, the electoral campaign still cannot begin.
Parliament considers that the Election Authority has failed in controlling the electoral calendar.
According to the spokesperson for Parliament, the session held on Monday, December 13 in Tripoli was devoted to discussing the difficulties hampering the electoral process.
This session took place in the presence of 65 deputies and was chaired by the number two of the Parliament, Fawzi al-Nouayri.
Political pressures
A parliamentary legal committee must examine the reports issued by the Ministry of the Interior, the High Legal Council and the High Electoral Commission.
This committee will then have to submit its recommendations to Parliament so that the latter can take the final decision on whether or not to hold the elections.
Some parliamentarians believe that it is up to the High Electoral Commission to postpone the elections, in view of the delay it has taken and the political pressures it has suffered.
