December 13, 2021 Tomorrow there could be a Council of Ministers that should decide on the extension of the state of emergency to March 31. The acceleration was decided by Mario Draghi to give a clear signal on the priorities relating to the situation of the pandemic.

The decision is imminent. There are two hypotheses on the table: the first is to arrive until March 31st, but it would be necessary to go through Parliament, the second is to "extend" the deadline of December 31st by one month, therefore until January 31st. The orientation, however, according to what is explained by government sources, is to go towards the first solution.

The Council of Ministers could be held as early as tomorrow. The parties of the majority have, however, opened the way that the executive intends to take. The position of the

Democratic Party is clear

. "I think the moment in which the government announces the extension of the state of emergency, the condition with which we avoid finding ourselves today like Holland, is ripe - explained the secretary dem Letta". On the same wavelength

. "We are waiting to meet with mayors and governors before the deadline, which is in three weeks, to understand whether they are necessary or not. I do not give ideological and a priori judgments", says Salvini.

The

state of emergency

is governed by law 225 of 1992, which established the National Department of Civil Protection, then updated in 2018 by a legislative decree in which it is said that this instrument "cannot exceed 12 months, and can be extended for no more than a further 12 months. months".

The last extension will expire on 31 December 2021, but the possibility of extending it will end on 31 January 2022. The request to extend the state of emergency until after the winter would therefore require a broad political consensus, a passage in Parliament and a specific law.
