A teenager "blew himself up" in a Prussian school, and 10 were injured

Russian police announced that an 18-year-old former Russian Orthodox school pupil "blew himself up" on Monday at the school, injuring 10 students.

Such armed attacks in public places and schools were usually rare in Russia, but these tragedies have increased in recent years, especially shooting incidents, which led to the tightening of legislation on the possession of weapons by order of President Vladimir Putin.

The Moscow region's Interior Ministry said Monday's attack took place at the Orthodox school next to the Vedensky Vladychny monastery in the city of Serpukhov, 100 km south of the Russian capital.

The ministry added that "a former student of the age of eighteen entered this school and blew himself up, and preliminary information indicates that he was injured, as well as a fifteen-year-old teenager."

The representative of the Investigative Committee, Olga Frady, indicated that the suspect who was injured in the explosion is now "in intensive care", so investigators have not been able to work with him.

She explained that the perpetrator wanted to commit suicide by blowing himself up.

"Ten children were injured" and nine of them were taken to hospital, said Ksenia Michonova, the regional commissioner for children's rights, via the Telegram app, but nothing threatened their lives.

Student Denis Ryabov told reporters, while leaving school with his mother, how he felt the smell of the fire.

He said, "The teacher said that there was an explosion... and many children cried."

According to TASS news agency, quoting police sources, the attacker planned to detonate an explosive device during morning prayers at the school, but it exploded at the entrance.

The motives of the attacker were not known.

The Russian Investigative Committee, which looks into major crimes, has opened an investigation into "attempted murder" and "trafficking in explosives".
