The South-to-North Water Diversion Project has been running for seven years, and the amount of water transferred is close to a Yellow River

One canal connects the north and the south

A channel of clear water connects the north and the south, moisturizes the vast land, connects the vigorous development picture, the magnificent landscape with beautiful mountains and clear waters, and exerts huge social, economic and ecological benefits.

On December 12, the first phase of the East Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project was fully accessible for 7 years.

According to data from the Ministry of Water Resources, over the past seven years, the project has transferred about 49.4 billion cubic meters of water.

Among them, the cumulative water transfer of the first phase of the mid-line project exceeded 44.1 billion cubic meters, and the cumulative water transfer of the first phase of the eastern line into Shandong was 5.288 billion cubic meters.

According to the estimation of the average runoff of the Yellow River for many years, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project is almost equivalent to the one-year runoff of the Yellow River transferred to the north.

Effectively alleviate the shortage of water resources in the north

"The water pressure is sufficient, the amount of water is stable, and drinking water is no longer difficult." Shi Shurong's home in Xiaoshitang Village, Suliuzhuang Town, Xiajin County, Shandong Province, was paved with water pipes and installed a faucet, and clean water entered the house.

Along the route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, more and more people said goodbye to the "difficulty in drinking water."

Before the completion of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the per capita water resources in the Huanghuaihai Basin was only 462 cubic meters, which was 1/5 of the national average.

"my country's water resources are unevenly distributed in time and space, and the per capita water resources are low. The South-to-North Water Diversion Project effectively balances the unevenness." said Liu Changming, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a researcher at the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The long flow of clear water has effectively alleviated the shortage of water resources in the northern region.

At present, more than 70% of the water supply in the urban area of Beijing is "South water", and almost all of the water supply in the main urban area of Tianjin is "South water". Shandong has formed a "T"-shaped water network... The water from the South-to-North Water Diversion has become more than 40 large middle schools in the north. The main water source of the city.

"The water from the South-to-North Water Diversion Project is continuous and sweet." Speaking of the changes in draft, Zhang Haiying, a villager in Beiwanglou Village, Guchengying Town, Qiu County, Handan City, Hebei Province, felt deeply: "The well water has become tap water and the scale is less. The water quality is good, and the boiled millet porridge has thickened.” Today, more than 5 million people in the Heilonggang River Basin in Hebei Province have completely bid farewell to high-fluorine water.

In Shiyan City, Hubei Province, the Danjiangkou Reservoir, the water source of the middle line, is misty.

Xia Tao, director of the Shiyan Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment, introduced that the local area guarded the source and took various measures to treat the water source wells so that the purified water from a reservoir could be sent to the north forever.

Up to now, the water quality of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project has been consistently up to the standard for a long time. The water quality of the main water supply line of the Eastern Route Phase I project has all reached the standard, and the surface water quality has been continuously and stably maintained above Grade III; the water quality of Danjiangkou Reservoir and the main line of the Middle Route has stabilized above the surface water quality Grade II .

Water source replacement and ecological water replenishment help the ecological recovery of rivers and lakes

The Hutuo River is as clear as training, and the reed flowers on both sides of the river are like snow.

"There are more birds and more fish," said Fan Zhenpeng, a villager in Tayuanzhuang Village, Zhengding County, Hebei Province, who often comes to the riverside for walks.

The middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project continued to replenish ecological water, so that the once-dried river can be restored to its former glory.

Baiyangdian, the "Pearl of North China", was once plagued by low water volume and poor water quality.

Since 2018, the middle route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project has continued to provide ecological water supply to Baiyangdian. With the introduction of the Yellow River and local reservoir water, the area of Baiyangdian’s Dian District has been restored from 171 square kilometers to about 275 square kilometers.

"Since the water supply, the first phase of the mid-line project has continued to provide more than 7 billion cubic meters of ecological water supply to more than 50 rivers in the north, comprehensively assisting the recovery of the ecological environment of rivers and lakes, the ecological environment has been effectively improved, and the ecological benefits of the project are obvious." Introduced by Cheng Dehu, member of the Party Group and Chief Engineer of the Administration.

At the same time, the groundwater level in North China has gradually recovered.

In 2020, the shallow groundwater level in North China will rebound by 0.23 meters compared with the previous year. This is the first time that it has stopped falling and rebounded after many years of continuous decline.

The groundwater level in the plains of Beijing has rebounded for 6 consecutive years.

At the end of 2020, Beijing's shallow groundwater level rose 2.37 meters from the end of 2014.

The Yangtze River Committee meticulously carried out the water dispatching of the Hanjiang River Basin and Danjiangkou Reservoir, scientifically formulated the annual water dispatching plan, and fully supported the improvement of the ecological environment of rivers and lakes in the water-receiving areas.

China South-to-North Water Diversion Group makes full use of flood resources in flood seasons to increase ecological water replenishment, promotes water source replacement, ecological water replenishment, etc., effectively guarantees the ecological safety of rivers and lakes along the route, and forms a beautiful scenery line with smooth rivers, clear waters and green shores.

"South Water" provides strong water resources support for coordinated regional development

Clear water flows slowly northward, providing a strong guarantee of water resources for the construction of Xiongan New Area and the implementation of the coordinated development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei.

In Zhengding County of Hebei Province, the main canal of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project is like a jade belt, sending "development water" continuously.

In Xiongan New Area, the main canal is opened, water plants are built, pipelines are laid, and the construction of a high-standard water network is speeding up.

In the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, "South Water" has effectively improved the navigation conditions of the canal.

At present, the section south of the Yellow River of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is fully navigable from Dongping Lake to the Yangtze River. Ships from 1,000 to 2,000 tons can sail smoothly, and the port has a new throughput capacity of 13.5 million tons.

A ditch of clear water flows north, connecting the main grain producing areas, energy bases, and important cities and towns in series.

Based on the national average water consumption per 10,000 yuan GDP of 70.4 cubic meters from 2016 to 2019, about 49.4 billion cubic meters of "South Water" has effectively supported the 7 trillion yuan GDP growth in the water-receiving area.

"The South-to-North Water Diversion Project has realized the connection and complementarity of the water-rich Yangtze River Basin and the water-deficient Huanghuaihai Basin, improved the comprehensive utilization efficiency of my country's water resources, and optimized the structure of my country's economic and social development." said the relevant person in charge of the China South-to-North Water Diversion Group.
