A 19-year-old inmate from the Gradignan penitentiary in Gironde died of an overdose on the night from Friday to Saturday in the premises of the prison, which she had just returned to after escaping.
The young woman, who was on semi-liberty and following a school course, had not returned to her cell on Thursday afternoon.
She was declared "escaped", according to a prison source.

The fugitive was found the next day at her mother's in Mont-de-Marsan (Landes), where municipal police officers came to arrest her, the prosecution said.
Back in the prison, where she was to integrate the women's quarter, she had an “overdose” and “could not be resuscitated” by the guards and the emergency services on the spot.
She had been sentenced for "acts of domestic violence" and was released in a few weeks.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning to find out the circumstances of the death, said the prosecution.
The investigation was entrusted to the police officers of the Departmental Security.
According to the South West regional newspaper, the detainee would have absorbed "a large dose of cocaine" after having insulted the guards.
In the space of a month, two inmates escaped from the same prison on November 11 and 21.
The first fugitive was arrested in Bordeaux and then placed in detention after three weeks on the run while the second man is still wanted.
