10 December 2021The French president, Emmanuel Macron, hailed what he called a "solid convergence of views" with the new German chancellor, Olaf Scholz. After his official inauguration on 8 December last, the German chancellor made his first trip abroad to France. Macron, addressing Scholz with the 'you' and the nickname "dear Olaf", reported that he had noted a "convergence of views, the desire to work together and the firm and determined faith of Europe, which we will need in the next months and years to come ". Scholz after the meeting at the Elysée with the French president, represented that: "We discussed how to make Europe strong again"  and explained that Franco-German relations "will continue to develop positively".

Solid growth and finances, two sides of the same coin

Answering a question about the

Stability Pact

, the new German Chancellor Scholz said that "maintaining the growth" generated by European funds for recovery is a priority, without however losing sight of the need to "continue to work on the solidity of our finances: it is not a contradiction, they are two sides of the same coin ". It is therefore possible to have both growth and solid finances in the European Union, ”said Scholz. The French president congratulated Scholz on his election, speaking of "solid foundations" for collaboration between France and Germany. The new chancellor underlined "European sovereignty in all its dimensions, whether we are talking about economic and security issues, as well as foreign policy".

Ukraine

The German Chancellor explained that he is looking "with concern" at the

situation on the Ukrainian border

, due to the movement of

Russian troops who raised the level of concern for a possible attack: "The inviolability of Europe's borders is a crucial principle for peace," added Scholz. "We will launch new initiatives to ensure that Ukraine has good prospects, Scholz later said, during the press conference alongside French President Emmanuel Macron." The Ukrainian situation - commented Scholz answering a reporter's question - we all see it develop with concern, there is a heavy deployment of troops, and it is important that this is spoken of in all

political exchange forums

, and it is appropriate that the president of the United States has sought dialogue with the Russian president, and we will continue on our part to act to ensure Ukraine a good prospect ". The new German chancellor then hinted at a" new formed "talks between Germany, France, Ukraine and Russia to overcome the crisis and create the conditions for a" de-escalation ". "We have a good foundation that needs to be revitalized, for example the Normandy format", explained Scholz, according to whom the borders of Ukraine "are inviolable".

The head of the Elysée agreed, arguing that "the stability and sovereignty of Ukraine must be defended". Both the Chancellor and the French president hailed the videoconference talks between US President Joe Biden and the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, as "positive".

Climate change

Regarding climate and climate change, Olaf Scholz specified that "common responses are needed" in order to effectively combat climate change. "Both Germany and France clearly see that the fight against climate change is a necessity", added the new German Chancellor, according to whom both countries "pursue the same path" to facilitate this transition.
