Clashes between fishermen and herders broke out on Sunday, December 5, about fifty kilometers from the town of Kousséri, following a conflict over access to a water point.

The violence then spread to reach the town of Kousséri, bordering the Chadian capital.

They caused the flight of thousands of people who crossed the river to take refuge in Ndjamena.

At least 22 people were killed.

After several

days of violence

, calm has returned to the town of Kousséri.

There was no clash this Friday, December 10.

Each community has remained in its neighborhood, says a community leader, who does not wish to be identified.

But the situation remains very tense, he adds: “

People are afraid.

Many do not even want to leave their homes.

There are only a few shops open.

In town, there is only one bar open.

 "

He himself went to shelter his family in neighboring Chad, before returning to Kousséri.

"There is nothing to eat here"

Since Thursday, December 9, gendarmes and soldiers have been sent as reinforcements and deployed in town to reassure the population, explains this inhabitant who also prefers to remain anonymous: “

The majority of women are on the other side, in the Chad.

There are only men here.

It's difficult to live here because the markets have been burnt down, the shops, the boutiques too.

There's nothing to eat.

 "

Both deplore this violence and hope that the authorities will find a solution to these recurring community clashes which have already left a dozen dead four months ago.
