The Emirate of Sharjah decided on Thursday to reduce the official working week to 4 days and announce 3 days of the weekend, two days after the UAE decided to move the weekend from Friday and Saturday to Saturday and Sunday.

The Sharjah Government Media Office said that it was decided to "change the weekly work system in the emirate in line with the vision of the United Arab Emirates to enhance its competitive position for various sectors in a way that supports the business environment and the economic market."

According to the statement, the new system that will be applied to government agencies in the emirate, "the weekly work system becomes 4 working days, starting from Monday until Thursday, and the weekend becomes Friday, Saturday and Sunday."

The new weekly work system for government agencies will be adopted as of January 1.

On Tuesday, the UAE decided to reduce the weekly working days from 5 to 4 and a half days, and to change the weekend from Friday and Saturday to Saturday and Sunday.

While the UAE will become the only Gulf country that does not adopt a weekend on Fridays and Saturdays, the resource-rich and economically ambitious country is copying with this step the working hours of the Western world.

Under the new schedule, the weekend in the UAE public sector begins at noon on Friday and ends on Sunday.

Friday prayers will be held in the country’s mosques after 13:15 pm local time (09:15 GMT) throughout the year.

The agency said that the new weekly work system "reinforces the UAE's position on the business map as a global economic center, as it will contribute to strengthening the integration of the national economy with various economies and global markets."

The new weekend, which has been rumored for years, was announced less than a week after the country celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The UAE used to adopt the weekend on Thursday and Friday until 2006 when it moved to Friday and Saturday in its public and private sectors alike.
