A helicopter crash in India on Wednesday killed 13 people on board, including Indian Army Chief of Staff General Bipin Rawat and his wife Madulika, along with four crew members, the country's air force announced.

"It is with great regret that it is now confirmed that General Bipin Rawat, Mrs. Madulika Rawat and the 11 people on board the helicopter died in the unfortunate accident," the Air Force said in a tweet.

He added that the accident occurred around noon on Wednesday near the town of Coonoor, and that among the dead were four crew members of the Mi-17V5 plane.

The sole survivor of the Mi-17V5 helicopter crash that crashed near Coonoor on Wednesday is Group Commander Varun Singh, who is receiving treatment at the Tamil Nadu Military Hospital.

Singh was one of 14 passengers on board the helicopter, and while General Rawat, his wife and 11 members of the armed forces perished, Singh was the only survivor, but he is in a critical condition.

"Wishing a speedy recovery to Captain Varun Singh, who is currently undergoing treatment at the military hospital," Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said in a post on Twitter.

Last year, Singh narrowly escaped when the light combat aircraft he was piloting, during its descent, experienced a system failure causing the aircraft to lose control completely.

It was an unprecedented fiasco that never happened.

There was a rapid loss of altitude, with the plane descending frighteningly up and down, heading at full speed toward the ground.

Soon after, at an altitude of about 10,000 feet, Singh again suffered a complete loss of control with absurd maneuvers.

Under this scenario, the pilot was free to abandon the plane, but in the face of potential danger to his life, he showed extraordinary courage and skill to land the fighter plane safely.

Due to his high professionalism, composure and quick decision making, Singh was given a name and a promotion.

As for yesterday's incident, the helicopter's black box and forensic examination of the helicopter's remains and other aspects will reveal the details of the accident, while Singh can provide a live report on the last minutes of the flight.
