• To sanction badly parked drivers in the blue zone, the municipal police in Les Herbiers does prevention with humor.

  • Accompanied by a prevention message, salted almonds are given to bad drivers.

  • The municipal police of Les Herbiers is not at its trial gallop.

No plum, but salted (and roasted!) Almonds. It is the initiative of the Municipal Police of Herbarium, in Vendée, which decided to crack down on offenders, by giving them these almonds (the fruit), not fines (the ticket). Indeed, the drivers of the Herbarium who do not respect the parking rules in the city have not received a fine. Instead, it's a note accompanied by a bag of toasted almonds, supplied by the town's Biocoop store, which is left on the windshield of their car by the municipal police.

A surprising move that might seem like a joke.

She is, however, very serious.

On this message is written: “Dear motorist in violation, we noted that your vehicle was parked irregularly in the blue zone.

You are therefore in the red zone and we could have awarded you a fine of 35 €.

But to allow you to see life in pink, we preferred to give you personally and free of charge some real salted almonds.

We could also have given you some plums but it is really not the season… ”The objective is therefore to prevent motorists, without penalizing them directly.

Only offenses in the blue zone are concerned.

"Passive methods that are really effective"

This message from the municipal police officers comes following the observation of a "carelessness" of motorists, who did not necessarily display their disc or did not respect their parking time. “We know that this principle is memorized much better than if we sanction. We make the motorist react with humor, ”explains Hervé Perton, head of the municipal police department at Les Herbiers. If this distribution of almonds is not systematic, or even eternal, the police are hoping that drivers will be made aware by their action. "These are passive methods, but they are really effective". Teaching, without sanctioning.

A method already used in the past at Les Herbiers.

In 2018, the municipal police had launched an action of this type: Dave, for Anti excessive speed device, with silhouettes resembling police officers, in order to slow down motorists.

This decoy is a high definition photo of a municipal police officer from the front, reproduced in 2D in order to "passively fight against speed in the city".
