December 09, 2021Media mogul Jimmy Lai and two other members of the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong were convicted on charges related to the vigil in remembrance of last year's Tiananmen Square massacre. Jimmy Lai, who is 74, owner of the now closed Apple Daily newspaper, was convicted of illegal assembly and with him also former journalist Gwyneth Ho and human rights lawyer Chow Hang-tung.

Lai's presence at the press conference to unveil the event "was a deliberate act to garner support and publicize the ensuing unauthorized assembly," Judge Amanda Woodcock ruled. After the ruling, the court withdrew and the hearing adjourned for 45 minutes. The penalties have not yet been disclosed.
