Chinanews, Beijing, December 9th, title: Why do they all give negative comments on "American democracy"?

  Author Chen Xiang

I wanted to use the "democracy summit" to consolidate the hilltop, but unexpectedly, the international community "made a big draw."

The US bullying under the banner of democracy seems a bit different.

According to the script, at the "Democracy Summit" on December 9, the "leader brother" the United States and a bunch of younger brothers celebrated each other, labeling "unpleasant countries" as the "opposite of democracy" to isolate and suppress them.

In fact, on the eve of the "Democracy Summit", the trend of international public opinion was unexpectedly reversed. Waves of negative materials about American democracy emerged, collected, and spread, exposing the "innerness" of the so-called "democratic elite" to the sun. .

China has published reports such as "The Situation of American Democracy" and "Ten Questions about American Democracy", detailing the fact that American democracy is "alienated" and criticizing the United States for using democracy to maintain its hegemony and create divisions and confrontations.

Russia pointed out that the United States and other countries "have stubborn problems in terms of freedom of speech, electoral systems, corruption, and human rights." They are attempting to use the "democracy summit" to divide the international community again, divide the world into "own" and "alien", and establish " Another pro-Western alliance".

The impression of American democracy in the eyes of China and Russia is not only recognized by other countries, but also corroborated by international polling agencies.

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, headquartered in Stockholm, recently released its annual report on the state of global democracy, listing the United States as a "democratic retrogressive country" for the first time.

The report pointed out that "As the bastion of global democracy, the United States itself has become a victim of authoritarian tendencies and has taken many steps backwards in terms of democracy."

The irony is that "confronting authoritarianism" is one of the three major issues identified in this "democracy summit." Will the United States have the courage to attack itself?

In the first half of this year, a global poll released by a Danish think tank showed that among nearly 50,000 survey respondents from 53 countries and regions around the world, nearly 44% were worried that the United States would endanger the democracy of their country.

Many of the survey respondents came from the invited countries of the "Democracy Summit" in the United States.

There are many disadvantages in domestic democracy in the United States, and international affairs have brought all kinds of coercion to other countries. These are the two manifestations of the "undemocratic" American democracy that the world recognizes.

Whether American democracy is good or not, we should listen to what the American people say.

Freedom House, the American democratic monitoring agency, ranked the United States after Chile, Costa Rica, Argentina, and Mongolia in the ranking of democratic conditions this year.

The Pew Research Center report shows that the vast majority of Americans are deeply disappointed in their country's political system.

Only 17% of people think that American democracy is worth emulating, while 23% think that American democracy has never been a good example.

According to a survey recently released by the Kennedy School of Harvard University, more than half of 18 to 29-year-olds believe that American democracy is "failed" or "in trouble."

American politicians feel too good about "American democracy", but the American people's empathy for "American democracy" has fallen to a freezing point.

The same America, such a split perception, can be called magical, reflecting the fact that "American democracy" is really sick.

"American-style democracy" has encountered so many "bad reviews" in the international community and in the country, and it is also very confusing: how can a country with such a dismal reputation for democracy be the speaker of the "democracy summit"?

Bundled with such a "democracy spokesperson", don't the participating countries feel that it is out of style?

Is the so-called "democracy summit" a conference to defend democracy or a democratic "tragic conference"?

Rather than obsessing about dividing the world artificially into “democratic” and “non-democratic” camps, it is better to first resolve the “democratic obstacles” that lie between politicians and people in your country.

If democracy is always used as a tool for political manipulation at home or internationally, the rotten roots of democracy will not be seen, and the “bastion of global democracy” will go to the opposite side. That is the sorrow of human civilization.
