Naomi Aira grew up in Stockholm with her mother, but moved to Jokkmokk a few years ago, where the reindeer herding family is on her father's side.

As the daughter of a reindeer herder, she became a member of the Sami village Jåhkågasska from birth - and she got her first reindeer from her father as a child.

"Goes a huge minus on the reindeer"

But to be able to invest in life as a reindeer herder wholeheartedly, Naomi Aira needs to expand her reindeer herd.

Today she does not have enough reindeer to be able to live on it.

- As it looks today, I just go a huge minus on everything I do with reindeer, purely financially, she says in Documents from within: The legacy and the silence.

Maximum ceilings pose problems

But each Sami village may only have a certain maximum number of reindeer in its area according to law.

For Jåhkågasska Sami village, the roof is 4500 reindeer.

This can mean that if a family manages to expand its reindeer herd, another must step down.

- There is no one who wants to reduce.

Many people want to make a living from it.

There is competition within the village, within all villages, says Naomi Aira.
