The time of confusion about where on the Schloßstraße in Bockenheim the cyclists are allowed to go is finally over, according to the will of the traffic department.

Since mid-November, there have been six large banners at the edge of the street and now make it clear what has been going on on Schloßstraße for over a year: cyclists should use the lane and are therefore allowed to cycle in the middle of the street.

For drivers, this means that they have to give the cyclists the right of way and follow them.

Irritations and "dooring zone"

There is not enough space for a separate cycle lane on the 800-meter-long section between Adalbertstrasse and Rödelheimer Strasse, unless the lane for parked cars has been dispensed with.

The new regulation was made possible by the reform of the road traffic regulations, which provides for a new traffic sign that prohibits cyclists from overtaking “multi-lane vehicles”.

In addition, a minimum distance of 1.50 meters now applies when overtaking cyclists.

The right of way for cyclists alone caused irritation.

In addition, a “dooring zone” was marked for the first time in Frankfurt in Bockenheim: a narrow strip parallel to the parked cars to protect cyclists from suddenly opening car doors.

Instead of avoiding the protection zone, many cyclists felt obliged to use the strip close to the vehicles.

Some drivers have pushed them there too.

The zone is now clearly marked as a restricted area.

Now the department hopes that the situation on Schloßstraße will ease thanks to the banners.

Initial feedback from road users is promising, and everyone is now sufficiently sensitized.
