06 December 2021 The president of the M5s, Giuseppe Conte, announced at a press conference that he is renouncing his candidacy in the supplementary elections for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies, which became vacant with the election of Roberto Gualtieri as Mayor of Rome. The former prime minister thanked the Democratic Party who had asked him to run: "I thank the PD and Enrico Letta for their availability and loyalty: but after a new supplement of reflection I realized that at this stage I still have a lot to do for the Movement: It is not possible for me to dedicate myself to anything else ". 



The attacks of Renzi and Calenda


Conte's step backwards comes after 24 hours of attacks against his candidacy arrived by various political exponents: the leader of Action, Carlo Calenda, had proposed his candidacy in order to counter that of the M5s leader: "I will do anything, even get to the 'personal commitment - so Calenda - so that that seat does not go to five stars ". While the leader of Italia Viva Matteo Renzi had said: "Giving a safe seat to the premier of sovereignty, to the man who signed the Salvini decrees, to the lawyer who saw no difference between justicialism and guarantee would mean total subordination". The retort of the former prime minister: "I have not seen the latest statements by Calenda and others - commented the former prime minister - but they want to advertise on my shoulders.Find another foothold, thank you. "



The proposal launched by the Democratic Party 


Conte had been indicated as a candidate of the Pd and M5s for the supplementary elections to the Chamber for the Rome 1 college, a seat left vacant by Roberto Gualtieri after his election as Mayor of Rome.

Elections that will take place on January 16th.
