18-month-old girl died at home, her mother's partner arrested

06 December 2021 The Court of Assizes of Como sentenced Gabriel Robert Marincat, a 26-year-old Romanian, to life in prison for the murder of little Sharon Barni, only 18 months old, daughter of her ex-partner, who was beaten and tortured on 11 January last in Cabiate (Como), in the woman's apartment. The court sentenced the accused to pay compensation, setting a provisional amount of 200,000 euros in favor of the child's mother and 50,000 euros for the father. The prosecutor Antonia Pavan in her indictment had asked for life imprisonment. The reasons for the sentence against which the man's defense assess the possibility of appeal are awaited. Marincat was present in the courtroom when the sentence was read.
"It is not the time for forgiveness. It is the time to try to leave again even if it will not be easy" said the mother's lawyer after the sentence.
The defense, for its part, disputes the decision of the Court to reject the request for a psychiatric report on the accused, which is why the appeal is granted.
Marincat had initially attributed the girl's injuries to an accidental event, but medical examinations had instead revealed the beatings and abuse.
