The toll is already terrible and it could unfortunately get even worse.

Some 31 people have drowned when a bus was swept from a bridge by a swollen river in central Kenya on Saturday, the local governor said on Sunday.

This bus took a church choir and others to a wedding ceremony in Kitui County.

The vehicle overturned before sinking in breaking water.

"There are always bodies in the bus," said Kitui governor Charity Ngilu.

Military divers continue to search.

"We have lost so many lives"

“It's so, so sad.

We have lost so many lives, ”added the governor.

However, people in the vehicle managed to escape on Saturday before it was quickly engulfed in water.

The precise number of passengers inside when it tumbled into the Enziu, the name of the swollen river, about 200 km east of the capital Nairobi, was still not known.

Witnesses said the bus driver attempted to cross the bridge as it was flooded with water, the force of which swept the vehicle into swirling currents.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta offered his condolences on Sunday to the families of the deceased, urging motorists to exercise caution on the roads during the rainy season.
