The death toll from Mount Semeru volcano in eastern Java island in Indonesia has risen to 13, with more than 50 injured so far, the Indonesian National Disaster Management Board said.

The council said in a tweet on Twitter that rescuers were searching villages covered in molten ash for survivors.

The eruption of Java's largest mountain stunned locals on Saturday, sending clouds of smoke and ash billowing and sending thousands fleeing the devastation to makeshift shelters.

Videos broadcast by local and village activists showed residents escaping from the ash rushing towards the homes below the mountain.
