Sudan .. Al-Burhan denies the possibility of military candidates running in the 2023 elections

The Commander-in-Chief of the Army in Sudan, Lieutenant-General Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, denied on Sunday that the military and paramilitaries participating in the transitional period will have the right to run in the upcoming elections in July 2023.

Al-Burhan's office said in a written statement that "the office of the President of the Sovereignty Council denied what was reported by the French news agency, Lieutenant-General Abdel-Fattah Abdel-Rahman Al-Burhan" regarding the participation of the military in the upcoming elections.

He added that "the participation of the military in the upcoming elections is not possible according to the text of the constitutional document."

It is reported that Al-Burhan told AFP during the interview, "In the constitutional document before the Juba Peace Agreement, there was a clear text that every participant in the transitional period would not be allowed to participate in the period immediately following it, but the Juba Peace Agreement gave some participants in the transitional period the right to be part of the next government.

And later on Sunday, his office explained that "the President of the Sovereign Council mentioned the signatories to the Juba Peace Agreement," which "gave some parties an exception regarding participation in the upcoming elections."

However, he "did not refer to any institutions affiliated with the army or state institutions, and this is what needs to be noted about it."

AFP's interview with Al-Burhan was one of interviews with international media a day after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described Sudan in a report to the UN Security Council as "in a state of hostility with journalists".
