Ovechkin joins a very closed circle of players who have scored at least 750 goals, including the Canadian Wayne Gretzky (894), considered the best hockey player of all time, Gordie Howe (801), nicknamed "Mr Hockey" and died in 2016 , and Czech star Jaromir Jagr (766).

The Russian, who has won the championship's top scorer trophy nine times, was playing his 1,222nd NHL game on Saturday night, all with the Capitals with whom he held the Stanley Cup in 2018.

Ovechkin, who plays right winger, was drafted in 2004 by the club in the federal capital.

With the Russian national team, he won three World Championships (2008, 2012, 2014).
