Will, who was elected to office for the first time in 2010 and was confirmed in 2015 with 64 percent, was able to unite 61.5 percent of the votes this time, according to the quick reports.

His Christian Democratic challenger Thies Puttnins-von Trotha got 31.9 percent.

The two candidates Irmgard Horesnyi from the AfD (3.6 percent) and Daniela Zaun from the satirical party “The Party” (3.0 percent) had no chance from the outset.

Also on Sunday, the social democrat Thorsten Siehr, Christian democrat Matthias Zimmerer and Christina Gohl (The Greens) competed for mayoral election in the city of Ginsheim-Gustavsburg (Groß-Gerau district).

Since Siehr narrowly missed the absolute majority with 48.5 percent, he and Zimmerer, who came to 35.4 percent, have to go to the runoff election.

The turnout was 43.3 percent.

Incumbent Puttnins-von Trotha (CDU) had not run because he wanted to become district administrator.
