"The National Institute of Public Health received the results of the first studies that confirmed the infection with the omicron strain of two passengers who arrived from South Africa to Bucharest on November 30," RIA Novosti quotes a statement from the department.

It is noted that the cases were a 48-year-old woman from Brasov County and a 59-year-old man from Vaslui County.

Both patients have no pronounced symptoms and are in isolation.

The Ministry of Health is awaiting the test results of another who arrived in Romania.

Earlier, the first case of infection with a new strain of coronavirus "omicron" was detected in Chile.

France has introduced a mandatory two-week quarantine for arrivals from southern African countries.
