• The Christmas market has been going on since last Friday in Strasbourg!

  • Where to go ?

    What to do ?

    Where to start ?

    The Strasbourg editorial staff of

    20 Minutes

gives you some tips to make the most of your visit.

You arrive in Strasbourg, ready to fill up on the magic of Christmas, but you do not know what or where to start?

That's good for you,

20 Minutes

goes around all the detours to fully enjoy the Christkindelsmärik or “baby Jesus market”.

Let us take the station as a starting point.

Keep it simple: exit the station and go straight!

Usually, chalets would welcome you on the forecourt.

For health and safety reasons, they are now spread over 13 places in the hypercentre.

Big change this year, which will not displease the more cautious: the check points at the entrance to the Big Island, formerly identifiable by the long lines, have been removed.

Gone are the long minutes of waiting while the scent of mulled wine is already being felt in the distance.

However, you will have to go through checkpoints, of course, but much less strict than before.

Start with the half-timbered houses ...

After the Kuss bridge, you come to a crossroads.

20 Minutes

advises you to take on your right and go to Place Benjamin-Zix, in Petite France.

What better way to start than to soak up the Christmas spirit with the creations of local craftsmen glittering in front of the half-timbered houses?

Then, head for the famous cathedral!

From Place Benjamin-Zix, you can take the Grand-Rue and head towards Place Gutenberg, a stone's throw from the building.

The opportunity to take a mulled wine and gingerbread break, before turning left towards Place Broglie.

… To finish at the foot of the Christmas tree!

Here too, visitors will be able to discover some improvements, such as the elimination of a row of chalets due to the sanitary context.

Bonus: there is more room to move around and avoid dropping your flaming wand due to an unfortunate nudge!

Finally, head towards Place Kléber.

There, you will be greeted by the magnificent Christmas tree which measures almost thirty meters in height.

The best is still to go there at nightfall;

at that moment, the conifer is draped in its finest garments of light.

And elsewhere…

There you go, whether you hurry or not, you will have enjoyed the essential places of the Christmas capital. But it would be a shame to stop there: until December 26 inclusive, Strasbourg city center is full of places to discover such as the Terrasse Rohan, below the cathedral, which houses the Alsatian delights market. Or the Place du Temple-Neuf, right next to the emblematic Christian pastry shop and its facade which is a firework display in itself.

Last tip: come on foot.

In any case, cars are prohibited in the hypercentre.

And taking the bike is to risk a hell of a balancing act, says Strasbourg.

You can also take the tram, but it may be crowded and the unions of the CTS (Strasbourg Transport Company) have announced an unlimited strike notice for the duration of the event.

Morality: in Strasbourg, the best is still the Christmas market.
