- Armed men shelled the vehicle, tore the tires and shot people, says Moulaye Guindo, mayor of the nearby town of Bankass in the Mopti region.

The incident is the latest in a series of deadly attacks in the region, plagued by jihadist violence from groups linked to al-Qaeda and IS.

Thousands of people have been killed and millions displaced since 2012, when an uprising by jihadist groups began.

The conflict began in the northern parts of the country but has since spread to central Mali and to neighboring Niger and Burkina Faso.
