The Russian army has announced that it has deployed and started operation of a surface-to-ship missile system on Matua Island in the Kuril Islands, clarifying its stance to further strengthen the military power of this region, including the Northern Territories.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on the 2nd that it has deployed and started operation of a new surface-to-ship missile system "Bastion" on Matua Island in the Kuril Islands northeast of the Northern Territories.

According to the announcement, a naval facility that can operate throughout the year has also been set up, and with the deployment of "Bastion", the surrounding sea area will be constantly monitored in the future.

Matua Island, which was once ruled by Japan and used to have an airfield for the former Japanese army, was previously an uninhabited island, but Russia has positioned this area connecting the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean as one of the military hubs. We are developing military infrastructure on the islands, including the northern territories.

Five years ago, surface-to-ship missile systems were deployed on Etorofu Island and Kunashiri Island in the northern territories to the south of Matua Island, respectively, clearly showing the stance of further strengthening the military power of this region.
