Merkel gave a speech at the beginning of the ceremony, during which she thanked citizens and political associates.
The Bundeswehr Orchestra performed several compositions, including three of Merkel's choice.
In particular, Merkel chose the song “You Forgot Your Color Film” (Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen) by German rock star Nina Hagen.
Merkel will officially leave the post of chancellor until December 8.
The Bundestag vote, during which a new German chancellor is expected to be elected, will take place on 8 December.
