Faced with soaring electricity prices, "the State will protect" consumers by guaranteeing that the increase is limited to 4% for individuals, even if this must cost him dearly, assured the Minister of Ecological Transition, Barbara Pompili, this Friday.

"Whatever happens, the State will protect", indicated Barbara Pompili, Friday morning on BFM Business (...), "it is never folly to support our fellow citizens in times of crisis".

Speed up renovation and insulation work

According to sector experts quoted by

Friday, the government's promise to limit the increase in electricity to 4% should cost much more than expected in the state budget, around 12 billion euros. Barbara Pompili also encouraged people to "consume less energy", in particular by speeding up renovation and insulation work on buildings financially supported by the State, via the "Ma Prim'Renov" system.

For energy-consuming industrialists, the Minister did not give specific information on what the government is doing.

They say they are strangled both by the surge in market prices and by the limitations to which they are subject for access to lower regulated prices (Arenh system).

Some fear plant closures at the start of 2022. "Our priority is to ensure that the evolution of the price of energy penalizes businesses as little as possible", she simply said.

"For energy-intensive companies", the government "worked to find short and medium term solutions" because "we can see that the volatility of the markets is not going to end," she added.

A European proposal

One of these solutions, according to Bercy, involves an evolution of the European electricity market, the prices of which are set on the costs of the producers that emit the most carbon on the continent. "We want to show that in the same way that Europe evolves, this market can also evolve", said Barbara Pompili, "while keeping its protective foundations" which allow rapid interconnections between countries and thus avoid blackouts on the continent.

The minister reiterated that France was supported in its proposal by five countries, "Spain, Italy, Romania, Greece and Malta" which are also suffering greatly from the surge in electricity.

During the meeting of the European Energy Council held on Thursday, France “made proposals to the Commission to develop this market and take into account the decarbonization of mixes.

It can help countries that are making efforts to decarbonize to be able to pass it on to consumers, ”said the Minister.
