The government has allocated 197 billion for road maintenance in Sweden.

The Swedish Transport Administration believes that it needs SEK 224 billion during the period 2022-2033 to maintain the current function - and an additional SEK 23 billion to take back neglected maintenance.

The road network is old and well over half (63 percent) of the roads were built before 1970. At the same time, traffic in the country has increased by 44 percent between 1990-2019.
