"The mortise and tenon process contains the unique and exquisite creation concept and wisdom of the Chinese nation; the many beautiful meanings symbolized by pine and cypress and cranes reflect the spiritual character of the Chinese nation; the bat takes the homophonic sound of'fu', which symbolizes people's pursuit of a better life." And the cultural connotation carried by the set of furniture "Songfeng", said Chen Yushu, the classical furniture designer of the China Pavilion at the Dubai World Expo.

The 2020 Dubai World Expo is being held, and the intangible heritage works of Chinese classical furniture are exhibited in the China Pavilion of the World Expo for the first time.

As the designer of the furniture sets "Songfeng" and "Shenshe" in this exhibition, Chen Yushu recently shared his creative journey with reporters from China News Service.

"I hope that the displayed works can break the cultural barriers between regions and allow people from all over the world to have time and space exchanges with Chinese culture at the World Expo, in order to achieve the vision of cultural exchanges, mutual learning from civilizations, and people-to-people bonds." To this end, Chen Yushu made a special trip to the UAE. Investigation and research.

In his view, China-Arab civilization exchanges have a long history, and the ancient Silk Road between the two places naturally contains cultural genes for tolerance and openness.

And creation also requires this kind of thinking, "Works are not only the display of materials and craftsmanship, but also the concept of openness and tolerance, showing multiple perspectives."

After more than two months, he conducted in-depth discussions with members of the UAE royal family, well-known artists, and the organizers of the Dubai World Expo. He visited the Ten Thousand Years Luxury Exhibition at the Louvre in Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Dubai Famous landmark buildings such as cultural museums.

"The jade of various colors inlaid on the white marble of the mosque is shocking." Chen Yushu pointed out that this inlay technique is similar to that of malachite and jade inlaid on furniture in the Ming Dynasty in China.

In Chen Yushu's vision, the works must show the unique symbols of the Chinese nation.

Combining the themes of the Dubai World Expo and the China Pavilion, he has repeatedly conceived, tried various designs, created dozens of drafts, and finally finalized "Songfeng" and "The Abode".

"These two works are more tolerant and open." Chen Yushu told reporters that good morals and a good life are the common pursuit of all mankind, and happiness is the value concept generally recognized by people all over the world.

On this basis, people of all countries can communicate with each other to build a community with a shared future for mankind, enhance understanding, and work together for a better future.

In the field of classical furniture design and creation for nearly 20 years, Chen Yushu's understanding of furniture has long gone beyond the category of "practical objects".

"In view of the differences in technological productivity, people's aesthetic level, and lifestyle in different eras, the furniture itself retains traces of history, showing the style and imprint of the era." Chen Yushu believes that Chinese classical furniture carries the invisible spiritual realm with tangible wood.

"Although Chinese classical furniture has a long history, for thousands of years, few people have described and demonstrated the "dao" contained in furniture." Chen Yushu hopes to transform Chinese classical furniture into cultural products and shape it into a representative China symbol.

The works designed and created by Chen Yushu have "showed up" in many international occasions such as APEC meetings, World Horticultural Expo, Dubai World Expo, etc., attracting international audiences to stop and appreciate from time to time.

He expressed that he hoped that the furniture he designed could become a world language, showing and narrating Chinese cultural ideas.
