In the process surrounding the car attack on the Carnival Monday parade in Volkmarsen, northern Hesse, the public prosecutor's office at the Kassel district court on Thursday demanded a life sentence for the defendant, subject to preventive detention.

In addition, the particular gravity of the guilt should be determined.

The now 31-year-old man is accused of deliberately driving his car into the carnival parade on February 24, 2020, injuring at least 88 people, including 27 children, some seriously.

According to the public prosecutor's office, two victims were temporarily at risk of death.

The man has to answer for attempted murder in 88 cases and grievous bodily harm, in one case for attempted murder and for dangerous interference in road traffic.

Prosecutor Melike Aydogdu said that it had been proven beyond any doubt in the previous 24 days of the trial that the defendant committed the act willfully, purposefully and planned in order to kill or injure people.

Public Prosecutor Tobias Wipplinger ruled out a reduction in sentences.

The accused acted insidiously, publicly dangerous and for low motives.

Folkmarsen attack "act of an evil person"

"A technical defect in the car can be ruled out as well as a medical reason for the defendant," explained Wipplinger.

The accused had not been under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Other causes could also be ruled out.

"He organized the act, targeted it and prepared it almost calmly." The defendant wanted to take revenge on humanity due to his desolate life situation, characterized by unemployment, financial problems, social isolation and frustration.

He was fully guilty.

"The act is an attack based on a very bad attitude towards people and society," said Wipplinger.

The accused wanted to kill or injure as many people as possible.
