The list of countries announcing the presence on their soil of the new variant of the coronavirus is growing.
The government of Sao Paulo, in southern Brazil, on Tuesday confirmed two cases of the Omicron variant in travelers from South Africa.
These cases are the first in the country and in Latin America.
"The confirmation was made after genetic sequencing," said the government of Sao Paulo.
The two infected people are a 41-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, who arrived in Brazil on November 23 and left for South Africa on November 25.
Another suspicious case, that of a passenger from Ethiopia who had previously visited South Africa, is being examined, said the health authorities of the State of Sao Paulo.
Other suspected cases have also been detected in Belo Horizonte (south-east) and in the capital Brasilia.
Brazil, like many other countries, has closed its borders to flights from six southern African countries.
