Teenager kills 3 students and injures others in US school shooting

Three students were killed and eight others, including a teacher, were injured in a shooting at a high school in the US state of Michigan.

According to officials, the victims are a 16-year-old male and two females, aged 17 and 14.

Officials said the suspect, a 15-year-old student, surrendered five minutes after the police were called.

Police said the suspect fired 15 to 20 shots at the victims with a semi-automatic pistol, and was alone.

The motives for the attack, which took place at Oxford High School in Oxford, about 65 kilometers from Detroit, remain unclear.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike McCabe told a news conference outside the school that calls began pouring into the emergency service at 12:51 a.m. local time.

Within minutes, he added, officials received 100 calls to the 911 emergency number.

He explained that a police officer at the school helped arrest the suspect.

No shots were fired during the arrest, and the suspect was not injured.

"He surrendered without any problems," McCabe said, later adding that the suspect was in the classroom before the shooting began.

The police cordoned off the scene and evacuated the school of students

The school was evacuated following the incident, and police are still searching the building for any additional victims.

Two of the wounded are undergoing surgery, while the health of the other six appears to be stable.

Officials said, during the press conference, that the suspect refused to speak so far.

They added that his parents had asked him not to speak to the police, and his home was being searched.

McCabe added that the suspect was not wearing any body armor, and that officials know how the gun was introduced into the school, but they will not be able to reveal those details yet.

"Of course I'm shocked. I feel devastated," said Oxford Schools Superintendent Tim Thrun.

School shootings in the United States have increased steadily in recent years, according to the gun control advocacy group Evertown.

Although incidents decreased last year during coronavirus lockdowns, the number of incidents rose to 138 school shootings so far in 2021.
